In the Fall of 2010, I was looking for a subject with a lot of color. At the same time, the Holland Area Arts Council (Michigan) initiated a competition to design an image for the annual Tulip Time poster. The subject was new to me, but offered the color I was looking for. I enjoyed painting these tulips, rendering bright colors with loose, expressive brushwork. The picture below on the left, "Yellow Tulip Stems," was choosen as one of twenty finalists for the coveted poster and is part of a "viewer's choice" exhibition around Holland in the Spring of 2011. The picture on the right (my favorite), "Fifteen Tulips," combines 15 single tulips into an expressive riot of color. Both pictures are available in a limited edition in two sizes, 12x18 inches and 20x30 inches. In addition, each of the single tulips in "Fifteen Tulips," is available as a small single picture square (scroll down to see them). The singles will let you mix and match tulip pictures and make your own grouping of these joyful pictures. |
